Future Plans with “going to”

In this lesson, students talk about future plans using be + going to and practice making arrangements (time, place, transport, confirmation). The main outcome is a short spoken plan and a clear written message arranging a meet-up.

  • Use be + going to to talk about future plans (I’m going to…, She’s going to…).
  • Ask and answer questions about future plans (What are you going to do? When/Where?).
  • Make arrangements by agreeing on time, place, and a plan.
  • Write a short arrangement message (text/email style) with clear details and confirmation.

Affirmative

Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb
• I am going to meet a friend.
• She is going to study tonight.
• We are going to watch a movie.

Negative

Subject + am/is/are + not + going to + base verb
• I’m not going to go out.
• He isn’t going to work tomorrow.

Questions

Am/Is/Are + subject + going to + base verb?
Are you going to work this weekend?
What are you going to do tonight?

Arrangement phrases (useful chunks)

• Are you free on ___? · What time works for you? · Let’s meet at ___.
• How about ___? · That works for me. · Sorry, I can’t. · Can we change it to ___?
• See you then! · I’ll message you if I’m late.

A: I’m going to go to the mall. Do you want to come?
B: Sure! What time are we going to meet?
A: How about 2:00? Let’s meet at the main entrance.
B: That works for me. I’m going to take the subway.

Practice 1: Quick drills (pairs)
  • A: What are you going to do tonight?
  • B: I’m going to ____.

  • B: Yes, I am / No, I’m not.
Practice 2: Choose a plan

Students pick one weekend plan card (coffee / movie / gym / shopping / park). Then they negotiate time + place + transport.

Speaking Task: Make an arrangement
  1. Invite your partner to do something this week.
  2. Agree on time + place.
  3. Add one change (e.g., “Can we change it to…?”).
  4. Confirm the final plan.

Writing task

Write a message (60–90 words) to a friend. Invite them to do something. Use going to at least 3 times and include time + place + confirmation.

Optional: students swap messages and reply with a change: “Sorry, I can’t at 6:30. Can we meet at…?”
