Paragraph Writing

In this unit, students learn the basic structure of a clear B1 paragraph: topic sentence → supporting details → concluding sentence. Students practice linkers for clarity (because, for example, however, therefore, first/next/finally), write a paragraph, and use a feedback checklist to improve it.

Objectives Structure Linkers Model Paragraph Writing Task Feedback Exit Ticket Homework Materials

SWBAT (Objectives)

  • Write a clear topic sentence that states one main idea.
  • Add 2–3 supporting sentences with details, reasons, or examples.
  • Write a concluding sentence that closes the idea (summary or final comment).
  • Use linkers to improve flow and clarity (because, for example, however, therefore, first/next/finally).
  • Give peer feedback using a simple checklist and revise writing.

Paragraph Structure

1) Topic sentence

States the main idea clearly (one idea).
Tip: don’t add too many details here.

2) Supporting sentences

Add reasons, facts, and examples (2–3 sentences).
Use linkers like because, for example, also.

3) Concluding sentence

Ends the paragraph with a summary or final thought.
Linkers: in conclusion, overall, so.

Quick rule

One paragraph = one main idea. If you have two ideas, write two paragraphs.
